Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at Institute of Science and Technology (IST) provides B.Sc. (Honors) in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) undergraduate course.
B.Sc. (Honors) in Electronics and Communication Technology was first introduced by National University of Bangladesh at the year 2005. Later, in 2007 it was converted to B.Sc. (Honors) in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) by National University of Bangladesh.
The vision of this department is to produce professionally as well as globally competent graduates in the field of electrical and electronic engineering and serve society by addressing the challenges for sustainable development. Its mission is to create a conducive academic environment achieving the highest quality of education and cutting-edge research. Moreover, to enhance student’s good communication and leadership skills and their ability to use their engineering knowledge in a rapidly changing world by providing state-of-the-art resources. Lastly, to produce socially responsible and morally upright graduates.
Only 75 students can study this subject every year. So far 10 batches has successfully passed out and all the time IST ECE students secured the first position in National University of Bangladesh.
About ECE
Electronics and Communication Engineering deals with the electronic devices, circuits, communication equipment’s like transmitter, receiver, integrated circuits (IC). It also deals with basic electronics, analog and digital transmission and reception of data, voice and video (Example AM, FM, DTH), microprocessors, satellite communication, microwave engineering, antenna and wave progression. It also has a great influence in the fields of robotics, biomedical engineering and nanotechnology.
What does an Electronics and Communication Engineer do?
All of the applications which make our life easier and enjoyable such as Television, Radio, Computers, Mobiles etc. are designed and developed by Electronics and Communication Engineers. Major works by and ECE engineer:
- Design and maintenance of satellites, which bring TV, telephone and Internet service into remote and rural regions.
- Creation of advanced communication facilities like video conferencing which bring people together from all over the world.
- Development of programs for various control and communication systems
Career Prospects
Electronics and Communication Engineering opens up great career prospects for the students. The students after completion of the degree can easily avail job opportunities in manufacturing industries and service organizations such as broadcasting, consulting, data communication, entertainment, research and development; and system support. The candidates can also work in modern multimedia service firms that are involved in real-time transfer of information through video conferencing and internet broadcasting.

One of the unique features of ECE is after completion of honors course, one can pursue many different subjects/fields like- MSc in Computer Science Engineering, MBA, Biomedical Engineering, Nuclear Physics, Renewable Energy etc.

ECE at Institute of Science and Technology (IST)
ECE was started at IST in 2005-06 as Electronics and Communication Technology (ECT). Later it was named Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) in 2011.Till now, seven batches of ECE have successfully passed out. Five batches are in study. ECE students can do their internship at Grameenphone, Robi axiata limited, BTCL, Bangladesh betar, BTV etc. Also, ECE graduate can do Govt. Jobs. They can appear in BCS exam, can do job even in bank’s IT section. Moreover, they can become ICT teachers in schools and colleges. If one like to do MSc. / PhD in foreign country, there are lots of scholarship funding opportunity regarding ECE subjects.
An ECE engineer can apply to the power sector jobs as well. Recently there are a lots of circular in power sectors for the ECE engineers. Some of those companies are: i) NESCO, ii) BREB, iii) APSCL iv) Rooppur Neclear Power Company ltd.
In communication sector there are circulars in: i) BTCL, ii) BTRC, iii) TSS, iv)Teletalk
They have a very good opportunity in Non-cadre BPSC jobs to become like: Programmer, Assistant Programmer, IT officer
Departmental Lab
IST, ECE department has enriched air-conditioned labs. All labs are facilitated with modern and latest equipment’s. Moreover, the labs are well furnished with multimedia projector.
Some of the mentionable equipment’s are: Optical fiber communication trainer board, Digital communication trainer board, Spectrum analyzer, Newton ring analyzer, Communication module, Digital oscilloscope etc.
Electronics, Communication and Robotics Club (ECRC)
ECRC club started its journey in 2011 as Electronics and Communication Club (ECC). Later in 2013 it as reformed as Electronics Communication and Robotics Club (ECRC). Every year ECRC club arranges various workshops, seminars, short courses for IST students. It provides all the technical supports for its members to participate in different competitions.
